My involvement with the Furnace Creek 508 race began in 2000 when a co-worker posted a notice on the bulletin board in the lunchroom.  It was an all expenses paid trip to watch a crazy cyclist ride through the deserts of Southern California.  Having been away from cycling for 10 years but familiar with a bike, I thought this sounds fun!  So, off I went with Tom Malamute Miller on his first attempt to solo at the 508. 

 By the end of the race I was already planning what kind of bike I was going to buy and asking all kinds of questions about equipment and training.   I was hooked!  I crewed for Tom the following year as well and rode in a couple of double centuries.  The one thing Tom told me prior to the race was it was not his fault if I got hooked into Ultra cycling.  Well Tom, I cannot thank you enough for my first year membership to the UMCA and introducing me to a wonderful sport!
