After crewing for Tom Malamute Miller for a second year, I told myself and those in the van (Mark Newsome and Bob Harding), that next year I would have my bike out on the course. That led to Mark Newsome and I to talking about a two person 508. And so we began planning our ride and putting together the logistics in the months that followed. As Mark noted a month prior to the race, “Planning for a race like this is like preparing for a moon launch.”
Two weeks prior to race day Mark suffered a family emergency and was in doubt if he would be able to ride. We decided that it would be best for him to be with his family. Mark, I rode with your family in my heart this year! Having lost my teammate I decided that I was going to ride no matter what, solo or team. I posted a message on the Ultra board and received such a great response from all of you in the Ultra community. You are all wonderful people!
After looking at the logistics of everything and many recommendations Dan
Crain became my new teammate and thus our team had the youngest and oldest
cyclists in our under 50 category.
I consider myself very fortunate to have had Dan as a teammate! He rode an incredible race, with a simile on his face at every exchange. I often had a hard time judging when to prepare for the exchange because Dan was climbing faster that I had expected. Then he would give me the most amazing push off. At each exchange he sent me rocketing down the road. Thank you Dan...
