I began cycling at the age of 11 when my scout master, Frank Fry, put together a trip starting near Lake Henshaw and ending in Ocotillo near Hwy-8. It was a two day trip and I quickly discovered my sport of choice. It was not long before I was doing the Rosarito to Ensanada fun ride and the Fiesta Island and Alpine time trials. By age 15 I was doing criteriums and road races around San Diego and Los Angeles. I also road in the Mexicalli to San Filipe, a 125 mile ride through Baja winning the youngest rider award. Through high school and college I was coached by Noberto Casseras the Columbian National Champion and stage winner at the Tour de France. Then one fateful day while training for the Olympic trials I was broad sided by a car that ran a stop sign in Mission Bay. The accident dislocated my shoulder, tore a number of muscles, and left me with many cuts and bruises. After recovering from my injuries I found I had developed a fear of cars, so much so to that I did not feel comfortable cycling. In 1993 I sold everything never planning to race again. In 2000 I found a flyer in my work lunchroom asking for people to support a crazy cyclist, Tom "Malamute" Miller, through a 508 mile course known as Furnace Creek 508. Having a cycling background I though it would be interesting. After meeting Tom and discussing cycling, he told me "You can not blame me if you get hooked on Ultra Cycling." Well Tom, it's all your fault...
